Through the influence of Otília Maria Nogueira, a member of the Floresta Viva Deliberative Council, who is strongly connected with the quilombola cause, the organization also decided to support some of the rights assumed by these traditional communities, especially the right to access land.
From 2006 to 2010, IFV carried out a participatory diagnosis of six groups in Itacaré, located along the Rio de Contas, which contributed to the formalization of five quilombos: Serra de Água, Acaru, Cuiudos, João Rodrigues and do Fojo. It was part of Floresta Viva’s work to support community strengthening through the creation of councils and to help them establish other partnerships. This cooperates with the organization’s purpose of enhancing communities' access to public policies.
